UST Breaks Title Drought, Ending NU’s Domination in UAAP Women’s Basketball

UST defeated National University in the UAAP Season 86 women’s basketball Finals clinching the championship with a 71-69 triumph at Smart Araneta Coliseum. This victory ended UST’s 17-year title drought.

Tantoy Ferrer was named Finals MVP, scoring nine straight points, leading UST’s dramatic rally after going down by as many as 15 points. Kent Pastrana tied the game at 69 with 26 seconds left.

Nikki Villasin delivered the championship-clinching layup, cementing UST’s victory and ending NU’s eight-peat dream.

UST won its 12th women’s basketball title overall, breaking a tie with Far Eastern University for the most championships, their first since 2006. Ferrer led UST with 19 points and 14 rebounds while Pastrana and Villasin contributed 16 and 12 points respectively.

The Tigresses broke an 11-year and 20-game losing streak to NU with a 76-72 win in Game 1, securing their place as the biggest threats to the Lady Bulldogs’ dynasty.
