Phoenix’s 5th Straight Win: Stunning Ginebra in PBA

Phoenix Super LPG stunned defending champion Barangay Ginebra, 82-77 in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Kenneth Tuffin hit a triple to break a tie and Johnathan Williams III sealed the deal from the charity stripe with 2:40 remaining.

Tuffin, a rookie from New Zealand, contributed 18 points while Williams III added 24 points and 23 rebounds–both game-highs.

The win was Phoenix’s fifth-straight in the conference for a 6-1 record–just half a game behind unbeaten Magnolia.

Phoenix trailed by nine points in the third frame but Tuffin and Williams III prevented the game from turning into a blowout. Triples from Jjay Alejandro and Tyler Tio tied the game at 66-all early in the fourth, setting up a fightback anchored on more three-pointers.

Ginebra’s Tony Bishop Jr. and Jamie Malonzo had prominent performances, but the team struggled without Scottie Thompson, who remained sidelined by a leg problem.

Ginebra will face San Miguel Beer next in a Dec. 15 contest that will be missed by reigning MVP June Mar Fajardo, who continues to recover from a left hand fracture.

Phoenix will face NorthPort on Dec. 20 after enjoying an 11-day rest.
