AFC Introduces New Entry Methods for Local Clubs
Philippine clubs will now find new paths to return to AFC competitions under a new format. They ended their continental campaigns in defeat this week.
Copa Paulino Alcantara champion Kaya-Iloilo, Stallion-Laguna, and Dynamic Herb Cebu finished their stint in the AFC competitions on a losing note. The three teams collectively managed to secure only one win and two draws against Asian opponents.
Next season will introduce a new format. The Champions League will be bifurcated, and the AFC Cup will be replaced with a new version of the tournament.
The AFC competitions will now include the top-tier Asian clubs in Champions League Elite and the second-tier participants in Champions League 2.
The third competition is the AFC Challenge League for clubs unable to qualify for the Champions League tourneys.
Just one slot
Philippines has one slot available for a playoff round in the Champions League 2. Kaya’s championship in the Copa will assure their nomination for the next season’s AFC competitions.
The Philippines Football League season starts in February and offers an AFC slot for the champion. However, clubs must have a license to be eligible for nomination.
In their Champions League matches, Kaya lost to Incheon United, Stallion lost to the Central Coast Mariners, and Cebu was defeated by Macarthur FC.
